        Alabama: Priester's Pecans

Dessert in the South basically starts and ends with an ooeygooey pecan (核桃) pie. Especially in Alabama, where the pecan is the official state nut. While there are plenty of farms that pick and package pecans, perhaps the most famous is Priester's, a familyrun business that's been supplying Alabama with its favorite nuts for over seven decades.

        Alaska: Salmon jerky

Forget beef jerky (肉干) in Alaska, it's all about the salmon jerky. Home to five different species of the flavorful fish (king, red, pink, silver, and chum), the northernmost state produces nearly onethird of the wild salmon consumed around the world. Bonus: Salmon is one of the seven healthiest fish you can eat.

        Arizona: Saguaro cactus

The largest cactus (仙人掌) in the United States, the saguaro cactus is found only in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. Living to be up to 200 years old, the cacti, whose flower is also the state's flower, are generally around 30 feet tall and can grow unlimited arms. Want to see for yourself? Visit one of these 10 outstanding desert escapes in America.

        California: Wine Guide

It isn't called "Wine Country" for no reason. Northern California, specifically Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, produce over 60,000 registered wine labels, making vino (酒类产品) the state's most valuable agricultural product. If you're looking for the most popular varietals (优质酿酒葡萄汁), the top two frequently planted grapes are chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon.

    1. (1) How long has the Priester's farm lasted?
      A . About 7 years. B . About 30 years. C . About 70 years. D . About 200 years.
    2. (2) Which state is famous for salmon?
      A . Alaska. B . Arizona. C . Alabama. D . California.
    3. (3) Where does the text probably come from?
      A . A library guide. B . A news report. C . A project handbook. D . A travel guide.

As the old saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." And neither should we judge movie stars by their ages. At just 21, Elle Fanning made history by becoming the youngest jury (评审团) member at the Cannes Film Festival. This year it lasted from May 14th to May 25th. "I was in complete shock when I got that phone call and that question if I wanted to be a member of the Cannes Jury," Fanning said during a press conference.

As it turned out, it not only shocked the US actress, but also brought criticism from those who believed Fanning was too young compared to other veterans in the industry. But Fanning's acting experience was in fact a good argument for her jury membership. In fact, Fanning has been a Hollywood fixture for longer than you realize.

The 21yearold has been in many big productions. She began acting in I Am Sam at age 2. With lead roles in movies like Super 8, We Bought a Zoo and Maleficent under her belt (取得成功), she's appeared in 60 projects and is one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. Fanning's devotion to work numbers her among the few former child stars who continue to act as adults.

In her latest movie Teen Spirit, which hit US cinemas last month, Fanning plays a pop singer. Since she had no singing experience, Fanning had to work with Grammywinning music producer Marius de Vries for three months before the filming started. "I would go to his apartment and sing through all the songs every day," she said. "He videoed me and recorded me singing everything and made me watch it back again and again to improve my skills."

With such rich acting experience and devotion to her art, "Fanning certainly was able to represent a new class in film" at the Cannes Film Festival.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "veterans" probably mean?
      A . shocked actresses B . green hands C . experienced people D . music producers
    2. (2) In which film does Fanning play a pop singer?
      A . I am Sam. B . Super 8. C . We bought a Zoo. D . Teen Spirit.
    3. (3) What does the wrier think of Elle Fanning?
      A . Wealthy B . Devoted. C . Considerate D . Friendly.
    4. (4) What is the main idea of the text?

Traveling by subway can sometimes be quite an adventure, especially during rush hour. There are the times when you have to avoid cups of coffee that could spill (溅) on you. The smells of some passengers' food are very strong, too. According to the Beijing subway passenger regulations, which went into effect on May 15th, passengers except babies and the sick are no longer allowed to eat or drink on the subway. Violators (违反者) who do not stop after being asked to will be asked to get off. The violation will also be recorded in the violators' credit record.

Some support the rule. The reason is that the smell of food and drink can annoy other passengers. "The smell of food fills the carriage, causing people discomfort, especially in the hot summer. Besides, eating on the subway produces rubbish. And on subway trains, people often spill their drinks," said Zheng Yiou, 17, a student from Hefei.

However, others question this rule. "Some citizens live so far from their work places that they have limited time to have breakfast before they go to work. Eating while they travel saves them time and decreases the chance that they will be late for work," He Songlin, a 17yearold student from Chengdu said, "And some people, like those with low blood sugar levels, get sick if they can't eat when they must."

Other Chinese cities like Nanjing and Chengdu have similar regulations. Some foreign cities also ban eating and drinking on the subway. For example, eating and drinking have long been banned on the subway in Washington DC. Singapore fines people who eat or drink on the subway up to 500 Singapore dollars, which is RMB 2,417 yuan.

Chen Yanyan, a professor from Beijing University of Technology, believed we should consider the need of some people to eat or drink on the subway. "Commuters (上班族) and travelers are sometimes too busy to eat. Maybe we could learn from Tokyo, where there are many subway stations equipped with services, allowing passengers to eat and drink," she said.

    1. (1) In which city was subway passenger regulations carried out on May 15th?
      A . Chengdu. B . Nanjing. C . Washington D D . Beijing.
    2. (2) What's the punishment for the passengers who break the rules in Singapore?
A . Eating on the subway. B . Drinking on the subway. C . Being fined up to 2417 yuan. D . Being asked to get off the train.
    3. (3) What is Chen Yanyan's attitude to eating or drinking on the subway?
      A . Worried. B . Sympathetic. C . Doubtful. D . Uninterested.
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the text?
A . Food and Drink Banned on Subway. B . The Adventure of Subway Traveling. C . Ways to Eat and Drink on Subway. D . The Services on Subway Stations.

Many of us think, wrongly, that the moon doesn't change. For example, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that "Generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons took alike, old and new."

However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA orbiter Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (月球勘测轨道飞行器照相机) . They found that there were lots of faults (断层) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.

According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core (核) .The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way comparable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin (葡萄干) . Over the past several hundred million years, it has become 46 meters "skinnier". But due to its hard and rocky crust (外壳) . the moon's surface continues to push up, "Some of these quakes can be fairly strong around five on the Richter scale (里氏震级) ," said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in the US.

But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place that human shouldn't try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported the Telegraph, "This isn't anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It's not going anywhere," Watters comforted us.

The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. "We have been to the moon and we've done some great science, but there is still a lot we don't know. The moon is shrinking we didn't really realize that until recently. It's a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that," NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.

    1. (1) Which point of view about the moon may the writer agree to?
A . It stays the same as before. B . It is becoming lightly smaller. C . It is getting older and older. D . It has passed away.
    2. (2) What can we learn about the moon from the third paragraph?
A . It has become 46 meters fatter due to expanding. B . It has changed from a grape into a raisin in recent years. C . It quakes even at seven on the Richter scale. D . It has a hot core and releases energy during expanding.
    3. (3) Who thinks that we needn't worry about the moon?
      A . Zhang Ruoxu. B . Thomas Watters. C . Nathan Williams. D . The journalist.
    4. (4) What does Nathan Williams think of the moon?
A . It is a dead and boring place. B . It has lots of faults on the surface. C . It is valuable to do more science. D . It isn't a place where we can live.
