On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and speedos!

Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystem with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit, Lewis says, "I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message."

It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.

Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.

This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

    1. (1) Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuit?
A . To swim faster. B . To show his bravery. C . To build up his body. D . To win public attention.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
      A . His body. B . The water. C . His body temperature. D . The water temperature.
    3. (3) What's Pugh's advice about swimming in freezing waters?
A . One must be fully prepared. B . One should be expert at swimming. C . One should be ready to take on challenges. D . One must be used to long-distance swimming.
    4. (4) What may be the best title for the text?
A . Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause B . How to survive a swim in cold waters C . How to prepare for extreme swimming D . Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible

While many countries love their tea, UK citizens are particularly proud of being “tea people”. The average UK citizen consumes nearly 2 kilograms of tea each year.

Tea only made its way to England in large quantities in the first years of the 17th century. Tea from China and a few other Asian countries was being sold more widely in England at that time. Then tea was getting more and more popular among different social classes.

There are many varieties of tea. Black tea mixtures are still the most common type drunk in the UK. Black tea is dark in colour, because the leaves have been allowed to oxidize (氧化) before drying. This is why we usually serve it with milk, although it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon. You may still find tea made with loose tea leaves, served up in a pot, and poured into the best china cups with saucers (茶托) for visitors.

Tea is still a large part of daily life in the UK today, but it seems to be on the decrease. The amount of tea sold in the UK fell by more than 10% in the five years leading up to 2002, and has been dropping ever since. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone, and most restaurants report selling more than twice as many cups of coffee as they do tea. More than £1 billion was spent on coffee in high street stores in 2013, more than twice what was spent on tea bags.

Still, what goes around comes around; it's sure to become fashionable again.

    1. (1) Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs?
A . Tea made its way to England in the early years of the 16th century. B . The UK usually serves black tea with lemon. C . Tea from China was being sold more widely in England now. D . UK citizens take pride in being "tea people".
    2. (2) What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A . Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone. B . Since 2002, the sales of tea has been on the decrease. C . In 2013, the money spent on tea was £3 billion. D . Most restaurant like selling tea than coffee.
    3. (3) What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?
A . It can never succeed again. B . The tea can become popular again. C . Coffee is more popular than tea. D . The tea is becoming less popular.
    4. (4) What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A . To introduce tea in the UK. B . To show the author's preference for tea. C . To introduce the functions of tea. D . To compare tea in China and UK.

Organic(有机的)farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural products. Use of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized by the use of green manure(肥料), biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productive. Limiting the use of man-made chemicals or completely doing away with them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. Organically grown food products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world-farmland cover. The hard work of Sir Albert Howard, the Father of Organic Farming, has paid off.

        Advantages of Organic Farming:

⑴The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion(侵蚀).

⑵Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more top soil

⑶Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.

⑷The use of green pesticides(杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human's health.

        Disadvantages of Organic Farming:

⑴Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.

⑵Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change. Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO2 , but not to a significant degree.

However, though there are some disadvantages of organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional farms. Organic agriculture is surely better in the long term.

    1. (1) The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard ____.
A . worked hard for nothing B . succeeded in organic farming C . spent all his time on organic farming D . didn't expect organic farming to be successful

二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
  • 5. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Zoo animals VS animals in the wild

Zoo animals usually live longer than their wild counterparts. This is because they have access to medical care and better nutrition in zoos. Moreover, there is a lack of predators(捕食者). Elderly wild animals lose their strength, ability to find and digest food and often lose their social standing in their species social structure. Zoos are learning how to care for old animals.

Boredom is a big problem for animals in zoos and something animals in the wild do not have to face. Animal experts believe that a small place produces boredom. They also provide companions and hide pieces of food so the animals have to search for it as in the wild.

A case in point is the Asiatic wild horse. The species was hunted to extinction in the wild by 1969. The entire world population now lives in zoos and nature preserves. The largest population is kept at the National Zoo in Washington. D.C. All of those animals were zoo-born.

Animals living in the wild may come into contact with people. The animals may hunt livestock(家畜)or eat farmers' crops. In good zoos, people can see that these animals are not just able to make trouble, but lead complex lives. This can help people save the animal and the habitat needed to keep the animal alive in the wild.

Animals often reproduce better when they are in the wild. One of the remarkable examples is the female giant panda. Using artificial(人工的) means has helped raise the worldwide panda population. Also, by trying to recreate the animal's natural living conditions as much as possible, zoo animals will breed.

    A. The goals of zoos have changed.

    B. However, some animals are an exception

    C. If they live in the wild, they have to battle against them.

    D. As a result, they are considered harmful and are hunted.

    E. Even so, it often leaves one to wonder if the animals live well.

    F. For some species, living in zoos is the only way the species can survive.

    G. So good zoos have replaced all metal cages for those animals that used to live in large areas.
