"Go watch the village super league(联赛)!" some Chinese people might say to a football fan like this. The village super league, or " Cun Chao" in Chinese, is a soccer game among different villages in Rongjiang county, Southwest China' s Guizhou province. It was held from May 13th to July 29th in 2023. The matches were so popular that at least 1 million people watched it on the field.
The football players come from different backgrounds. They are sellers, drivers, students, etc. They come from different ethnic(民族) groups such as Miao, Dong, and Yao. Their ages are from 15 to over 40 years old. But when they put on their team uniforms and walk onto the field, they fight for their common love — football.
Like "Cun Chao" , another village sports event called " CunBA" was also popular. The matches were held in Taipan village of Taijiang county, Guizhou province. Four teams competed in the finals. The winner of the first " Gorgeous Countryside" Basketball League came out on March 27th. Over a hundred thousand basketball fans went there to watch the exciting matches.
Both "Cun Chao" and "CunBA" enjoy a long history in Guizhou. Football in Rongjiang dates back to the 1940s and basketball in Taipan dates back to 1936. Now, under the support of the government, more people can take part in sporting events and enjoy it. At the same time, these sports events are also helping the development of these villages.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you' re talking to someone but they keep looking at their phone? This is called " phubbing" — a mix of the words " phone" and " snubbing(不理睬)" .
When someone is " phubbing" , they' re using their phone to look through the online news, check messages, play games and so on, instead of focusing on the conversation or spending time with the people they' re with. The word was first used back in 2012, when fewer people had smartphones. And now that most people have smartphones, phubbing is a common problem.
Most people would agree that it' s rude to be focused on your phone when you' re spending time with another person. The expert William Hanson thinks so, too. " Phubbing is a no-no!" he says. " If you have planned to go out with friends, focus on them and not your friends on your phone. "
Studies have found that phubbing can damage your relationships with others. Phubbing can make people feel left out, and those who " phub" are thought of as less polite and caring.
So science has shown that phubbing is not good for us — but why do we do it? It might be because we are feeling bored, worried or stressed. Or it might be because we are addicted to(沉溺于) checking our phones, especially social media.
Whatever the reason may be, phubbing is a bad habit and can make us miss out on real moments with the people around us. So the next time you' re spending time with a friend or family member, try and keep your phone out of sight!

A new world record has been set for the world' s heaviest pumpkin. An American called Travis Gienger has grown a pumpkin weighing 1, 247kg. It weighs more than four polar bears put together. But do you really know pumpkins?

Puffins are the most common birds on the Westman Islands in Iceland. Different from most sea birds, they are able to go under water to 60 meters deep to catch fish. Each spring, they lay eggs in burrows(洞穴) on cliffs. 40 days later, they will fly back to the sea, leaving the young there. Baby puffins would spend about six weeks in the burrows alone before they' re ready to fly and take to the sea.
In the past, young puffins could easily find the sea by following the light of the moon. But now, bright lights of the city often make them lose their way. Many of them end up flying into the town. However, it' s difficult for young puffins to find food in the town, so they may lose their lives there.
That' s why people on the Westman Islands have decided to help those young puffins. In late summer, when young puffins leave their burrows, local people often go out to look for the lost puffins at night. If they find one, they would pick it up and put it in a box. The next day, they would take it to the cliff and throw it off. In this way, young puffins can fly safely toward their new home for the next few years.
The unusual tradition also helps make sure the puffins will be back to their burrows another year. Puffins lay one egg each year at most, so the help from the people on the Westman Islands is important to puffins.
