A little boy has written and illustrated(加插图于)a storybook himself to help raise money to buy a new wheelchair. Alfie Dormand began writing his book The Monkeys That Stole A Bus after being inspired by a day out at Paignton Zoo. He even illustrated the book himself using a computer program to create colourful drawings to illustrate his imaginative tale.

Through sales of his storybook on the Internet and donation through his Just Giving page, Alfie has raised over £1,000 towards the costs of the new electric wheelchair, which would give him greater independence than his current manual wheelchair. He has a disease called L1 syndrome and a related condition known as Hydrocephalus(脑积水), both of which affect his ability to move.

His mum Michelle Dortmund said," We hired an electric wheelchair three years ago when we went to Paignton Zoo and he loved it. We were delighted to see him get around in the wheelchair without being pushed by others. He fell in love with the flamingos(火烈鸟). When he saw how cheeky the monkeys were, it just gave him some ideas for stories."

Teachers have been reading the book to other pupils at Alfie's school. Parents have been buying the book to support the Alfie's fundraising efforts, with Alfie even signing books like a professional. The winner of the World's Strongest Man competition, Eddie Hall, also features in the book, and the strong man bought a copy and sent Alfie a video to say thanks.

The schoolboy likes to make little stories. He does all of the drawings on the computer himself as he finds using a pen difficult.

As the story shows, life can be so difficult. However, positively face it and work hard, and we'll get help from others.

Most people say "yes" much more readily than" no".

A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted were a couple of quiet days relaxing at home. Or a roommate spends the entire weekends playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for" reference". But, you've just finished it after taking a whole day to work hard. Many people say" yes"to these kinds of requests. They usually don't consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards.

Saying "no" requires courage and considerable practice, in fact, according to psychologists. "Everyone wants to be liked," says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist." Saying'no'risks losingthe affection of the person asking the favor or even a job."

In fact, refusing a request can even help to strengthen a relationship because it expresses a true feeling. But, for people used to agreeing to every request, changing can be a long and uncomfortable learning process.

Most people believe that "If I say'no', I'll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to me." This way of thinking can be replaced by this:" If he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of his affection is too high in the long term."

Steinki says the key is talking to the other person to find a mutual solution." One needs to present the situation from one's own point of view, and to suggest how the situation can be dealt with to the advantage of both parties. The other person must have the feeling that his interests are being considered." When the refusal is not accepted, you can give the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message.

More than a third of the world's population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Engineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas access clean drinking water.

They developed a low-cost gel film(凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Combining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konjac gum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity, one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.

Previously, researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a vast improvement from previous water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be molded into a shape or size that best suits the user.

"This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driestplaces on Earth," said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering." This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices at home that they can easily operate."

"This is not something you need an advanced degree to use," the paper's lead author, Youhong "Nancy" Guo said." It'sstraightforwardenough that anyone can make it at home if they have thematerials." Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the yield, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.
