When I was 17, I read about a museum called the McNay. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, "Do you have the address?" "No, but I'll recognize it. There was a picture in the magazine."

"Oh, stop. There it is!"

The museum was free. We entered, excited. The people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.

"May I help you?" a man asked. "No," I said. "We're fine." I didn't want to listen to a tour guide talking about a painting I was not interested in. Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very strange, keeping their eyes on me. "Where do you think you are?" he asked. "The McNay Art Museum!" I answered. He smiled, shaking head. "Sorry, it is on New Braunfels Street." "Then, what's this place?" I asked, still confused. "Well, it's our home." "What?!" I was shocked. I ran to the staircase and called out, "Sally! Come down immediately!"

"There're some really good works of art up there." She stepped down, looking puzzled. I pushed her towards the front door, waving at the family, saying, "Sorry, please forgive us. You have a really nice place."

The real McNay was wonderful, but we felt nervous the whole time we were there. Van Gogh, Picasso, Da Vinci, Monet... This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.

On a sunny day 30 years later, a woman came close to me. "Excuse me, did you ever enter a house, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?"

"Yes... But how do you know?"

"Well, that was my home. I was the teenager sitting at the corner of the hall that day. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. My feelings about my home changed after that. I've always wanted to thank you."

78-year-old Li Zhenhai has been greening mountains for over 30 years. In all, he has completed the afforestation(植树造林)of more than 2,000 mu of land and has planted more than 600,000 trees. Over the years, he has donated young trees worth more than 4 million yuan. He was awarded the title of National Model of Greening and Afforestation in 2006, and received the National Green Gold Great Wall Medal in 2018.

Li was born in 1944 in Shandong province. In 1973, he came to Daur to visit relatives. To pass time, he collected mushrooms, fungus and hazelnuts and earned more than 300 yuan a week. That was what he used to earn in his hometown in a year. So he decided to stay there a live a better life.

In the following years, Li and his wife lived a quiet and comfortable life by farming. But a sudden rainstorm in 1980 washed away their land. Therefore, he decided to plant trees to make a living and protect the local environment.

Seeing he was strong-willed, his wife decided to go up into the mountains with him.

Life in the mountains was very hard. There was no electricity and mosquitoes were everywhere. There were no vegetable fields, so they had to pick wild vegetables to feed themselves. They had little for rest. Planting trees in spring is the hardest. Every morning, they had to move the young trees up to the mountain, and work for more than 10 hours every day.

What's worse, because of a lack of(缺乏)technology and planting experience, less than 10% of the young trees could survive in the first seven years. So Li began to read various forestry magazines. Their hard work attracted support from the local government including technology and money. Thanks to that, more than 95% of the pine trees could grow well.

They have also put their experience in planting trees in a guidebook to share with the villagers, to encourage others to take up afforestation.

And now Li Zhenhai's biggest wish is that everyone plants a few trees every year. He believes the desert will finally become an oasis by doing this.

Rethinking "Smarter" Cities

The idea of "smart" cities was first put forward in the 1970s. Since then, it has spread to more and more countries. People hoped new technologies could help them live happier lives in cities.

Governments aren't the only ones interested in building "smarter" cities. Many companies see the smart city program as a great chance to make money. Leading tech companies have all offered their smart-city solutions. However, many project designers don't have a clear idea of what they are going to achieve. They proudly show off exciting new technologies like 5G, but they don't know how to use them to solve real-world problems. In other words, they sound more like tech sales people than city builders.

This can cause many problems. City planning should always center around one question: What can be done to improve people's living conditions? Private companies, however, have to take care of their own business interests first. Their answer to every problem is simply more technology. Their solutions often have nothing to do with people's daily lives.

Sometimes, the problem is not a shortage of "smart" technologies. For example, self-driving cars are certainly "smarter" than bicycles. However, they may cause much more traffic jams. They don't really make the city a better place to live.

City managers should carefully think about the kind of life to provide for people. Planneres and tech developers should work according to this blueprint(蓝图). They should stop worrying about making our cities "smarter" and start to focus on making them better.

If and when you are considering getting a new pet, the first thing to do is to consider yourself and your lifestyle. Never buy a pet out of a sudden idea. Animal shelters(庇护所)worldwide are full of wonderful pets whose owners got them but later realize they could not take care of them. Learn more about how to choose the right pet below.

Not all pets are the same. Some pets are more self-sufficient than others — certain pets such as dogs require a lot of attention, others such as turtles can go days (even weeks) without food and water, so you should think carefully before you bring home a pet.

You can find books and articles on the Internet to help you select the right pet, but these questions are a good place to start:

How much time and energy are you able to give a pet?

●Are the family members all busy working / studying?

●  Is there anyone who can look after the animal when you all are away from home?

What is your living situation?

●  Do you live in a flat or a house?

●  Have you got a fenced yard?

●  ______▲______

What ages are your family members?

●Are they too young to be left alone with a pet?

●Are they old enough to help take care of the animal?

●Are there elderly people who may be uncomfortable to an overactive pet?

Do any family members have allergies or fears about certain types of pets?
Is the family in agreement about owning a pet?

Where will the pet spend its time?

Asking yourself these questions will help you decide if a dog or cat is a better choice, or if a bird or rabbit would better suit your lifestyle. Once your choice has not been narrowed down, come talk to us or e-mail us at petchoice@126.com. Our staff are experts in helping you choose the right pet for your situation.

任务型阅读

Hello, I am Hanna from France. I have been studying in Dalian Minzu University for four years. Among all the things I learned here, the great spirits of the young Chinese impressed me the most.

Before I came to China, I learned that Chinese people are hard-working, which was proved by my best friend Wang Lulu, a 25-year-old Chinese girl. Whether taking a bus, walking or doing housework, she uses every minute to listen to foreign news and takes every chance to talk with foreigners. Now she is good at English.

I saw many young Chinese volunteers send food and help organize people to take the nucleic acid test. Most often, they had to work for over 12 hours a day, but they just faced the difficulties with warm hearts!

The last thing I want to mention is the great respect that young Chinese have shown to their traditional culture. I still remember when attending the traditional Chinese handcraft class, all my Chinese classmates showed great interest in their traditional art and their teacher, a famous traditional Chinese artist.

I am lucky to have witnessed many great moments in China, such as the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the return of Shenzhou XIII manned spacecraft and more. I learned from the news report that many of these great projects are undertaken by young Chinese scientists, and the average age of young engineers is under 30. The young generation is surely making China better and stronger in the future.

A. She keeps improving her language skills in her busy life.

B. I love the pleasant living environment and learn a lot about China.

C. So, I would like to say that China's success is not because of chance.

D. Taking pleasure for helping others is what I saw in the battle against the pandemic(疫情).

E. In addition, it is very common to see college students wear traditional Chinese clothes

Winning feels good; losing feels bad. Some people think that losing is a texperience. Unfortunately, we can't always win, so it's important for us to athe bad feeling of losing and turn it into a positive(积极的)lesson that teaches us the ways we can improve.

At the Tokyo Olympics, China's mixed-doubles table tennis team of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen won silver iof gold. They took the loss like good sportsmen. Some Chinese fans, however, were angry and disappointed. In their opinion, all table tennis golds should go to China.

There is a popular saying goes like this: "You can't win unless you learn how to lose." It's from a famous basketball player who experienced many years of losing a he had won a championship early in his career. However, he later went on to win five more championships.

Sports is a lot like life. We are always competing to get into the best schools, to win prizes, and to get better jobs. We don't always win, but every loss can be an opportunity to learn and, through this process, to improve. We should raise our s when we are losing.
