Bergl doesn't consider himself the next Thomas Edison. He's just a man who loves animals, Africa and adventure. Yet, Bergl might have invented a tool as great as the light bulb(灯泡)—a tool that uses modern-day technology to solve an almost prehistoric problem.

The tool is called the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART). It is designed to be waterproof(防水的), shockproof and poacher(偷猎者) proof. Bergl worked with the Bronx Zoo and worldwide wildlife groups to develop it in 2011. Since then, it has been seen in more than 55 countries where poachers have forced the best-known but most threatened species to near extinction.

SMART works as a very simple smart phone —it lets the user record observations, like animal sightings, behavioral changes in animals and illegal activities. If a park ranger(管理员) sees something that is very important, that information gets entered, sent to the cloud and sent out to the base camp so they can take action and stop the killing.

Bergl and his workmates travel to African wildlife reserves now and then. They teach park rangers in some of the most remote countries how to use SMART. "SMART makes collection of information easier. It allows us to focus on the things that really matter, according to what the information is telling us, "said Kim Young, director of the Panthera cheetah program at Etosha National Park in Namibia. "Thanks to SMART, most of Africa's endangered species seem to be coming back. "

Bergl never plans to make money from his small but great invention. SMART is free and doesn't even have a patent(专利).

I had heard about VR being used in the classroom but didn't think I'd ever try it. I actually got a VR headset (耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through Google Cardboard and knew I had a lesson!

To use VR in the classroom, you need two things:a smartphone that can download the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we'd be watching, I searched through free VR apps like Orbulus, Trench Experience VR and Cardboard. I also found hundreds of videos on YouTube. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don't give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, theyare still amazingly immersive (沉浸式虚拟现实的) when viewed through the headsets.

So far we've had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade U. S. History class. The Trench app allows students to "walk" through a trench (战壕) during World War I and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions (反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.

For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I'm going to write to my boss asking for a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.

While telling others your zodiac sign (星座), you are being evaluated (评估). Evaluations are being made about your luck, your personality, future development and how you will do in a given year. So what is the Chinese zodiac, exactly? It's a 12-year cycle labeled (标记) with animals, starting with a Rat and ending with a Pig. For example, if you were born in 2004, you are a Monkey.

The Chinese believe some animals are luckier than the others, such as the Dragon. Unlike in Western tradition, the Chinese Dragon stands for power, strength and wealth. It's everyone's dream to have a Dragon baby. Ma Yun's parents must have been very proud. And they are not the only ones. In 2012, the Year of the Dragon, the birthrate in China increased by about 5%. That means another one million more babies. With a traditional preference for baby boys, the boy-girl ratio that year was 120 to 100. When those Dragon boys grow up, they will face much more serious competition in love and job markets.

According to the BBC and Chinese government reports, January 2015 saw a peak of cesarean sections (剖腹产术高峰). Why? That was the last month for the Year of the Horse. It's not because they like horses so much, it's because they try to avoid having unlucky Goat babies.

Tiger is another unwelcome animal, because of its dangerous and unstable (不稳定的) personality. Many Chinese places saw a considerabledeclineof birthrate during those years.

Perhaps one should consider zodiac in a different way, as those Tiger and Goat babies will face much less competition. Maybe they are the lucky ones. I went through the Forbes top 300 richest people in the world, and it's interesting to see the most unwelcome two animals, the Goat and Tiger, are at the top of the list, even higher than the Dragon. So maybe we should consider that it's much better to have less competition.

Online Safety

Today I thought I'd blog about a question that has been asked many times, how do you stay, safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet? I am not an expert,

First of all, there's the golden rule of the Internet:If you see or read something that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the site immediately.

Second, protect your privacy. Someone might use the information to steal your identity. Identity theft is a common and serious problem.

Third, Being online is no excuse for being rude, and you don't want to become a target for a troll or cyberbully. A troll is a person who posts comments or questions in order to stir up trouble online. Trolls often use several false names so that they can stay on a site. A cyberbully uses the Internet to be mean to others. Like a troll, a cyberbully will also write something mean but it is usually directed at particular people. He or she may also post embarrassing photos and information about those people. However, the more polite you are, the less likely it is you will be attacked.

Have you had any bad experiences online, or do you have some good advice for staying safe?

A. What is cyberbully?

B. Post your comments below!

C. Don't let out your online habits.

D. Don't post comments or click on anything.
