Hey, there! Do you know which gift becomes the most popular one to be sent by Chinese? Of course, Chinese knot! With the Chinese cultural development all around the world, when Chinese people go abroad for business or study, they may choose a Chinese knot as a gift to their foreign friends, which makes it widely spread in the world.
The Chinese knot is a beautiful handmade art work that began as a traditional art in Tang and Song Dynasties, and became popular in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
It is named according to its different shapes, usages and origins (起源). The Treasure Knot, for example, is with the appearance of "Yuanbao". The Torx Knot looks like "meihua" which is a kind of beautiful flower. The Kingdee Knot is in a shape of a golden butterfly (蝴蝶), and can you believe, there is a knot called the Wukong Knot which comes from the Incantation of the Goden Hoop (紧箍咒) of Monkey King.
There are two main processes in making a Chinese knot, naming tying (打结) knots, and shaping. The ways of knot-tying are fixed, but the shaping skill is not always staying the same. Because of this, how well a Chinese knot has been made can show the skill of a knot artist.
The Chinese knot has been served as wishes now. The materials can be cotton, nylon (尼龙) and so on, and many of them are red, which stands for good luck in China. Therefore, the knots are usually sent as gifts in some important Chinese traditional festivals or on someone's big day to carry people's best wishes to their family or friends.

Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was officially recognized (认定) as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn't he known for his invention at the time?
Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity. When two places were connected with wire (电线), people in those places could hear each other talk.
In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Ester, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill. To solve this problem, he connected metal cables (电缆) between his home and his workshop. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently.
Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer was heard through the wires. Unluckily, only a few people attended this talk. Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent (专利) on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him.
In 2002, more than a century after Meucci's death, his work was finally recognized by the government.
